Deep South Plant Genetics

Gulf Coast Flora is a wholesale native plant nursery farm located in Arnaudville, Louisiana specializing in plants native to the Southeast region and South Louisiana ecotypes for landscape projects. Our ecotype plants are grown from sustainably sourced South Louisiana prairie remnant seed genetics. We also collect seeds from remnant, pine savannahs, meadows, glades, marshes and swamps.

At Gulf Coast Flora, we are passionate about preserving local genetics. We work closely with private landowners to ensure the preservation of these important plant species. When you source plants from us, you are not only supporting local conservation efforts but also receiving true wild-type plants that are uniquely adapted to our Southeastern climate. These plants have developed strong relationships with our soils, insects, microorganisms, and wildlife over millions of years.

We are committed to increasing awareness and availability of Southeast plant genetics, ensuring that these valuable resources continue to thrive for generations to come. The importance of local ecotypes is becoming more recognized in landscaping with native plants because local genetics are required for a landscape to thrive and be as successful as possible. This is key when sourcing natives for projects, because the species may be the same, but the ecotype may be poorly suited for our hot and wet climate. The majority of native plants available in the trade are grown and sourced from the northern part of the country and lack resistance to heat and local diseases that may be more prevalent in the south. We aim to provide plant material with southern genetics that will allow native landscapes in the South to grow to their fullest potential.

Thank you for choosing Gulf Coast Flora for your wholesale native plant needs. We look forward to serving you and contributing to the preservation of our local ecosystems.

Sustainably Harvested Remnant Seed

Our sustainable seed harvesting practices take place on private land, ensuring the health and integrity of natural ecosystems. Seeds are collected from well-established, healthy habitats with 100% native cover, observing species over time and harvesting only when at peak ripeness. We adhere to strict guidelines, never harvesting more than 50% of a species' seed, and less than 10% for rare species.

Transplanting established individuals is inefficient and can harm populations. By harvesting seeds, we grow new genetic reserves, preserving species' ability to propagate themselves. Some plants that spread vegetatively can be transplanted with care, ensuring minimal impact on their reproductive capacity.

Plant poaching in unfamiliar or preserved lands disrupts ecosystems, threatens species with extinction, and undermines conservation efforts. Intact wild populations' genetic profiles are essential for adapting to changing environmental conditions. Sustainable harvesting ensures populations can regenerate, promoting ecosystem health and preserving genetic diversity.
